Your Google Business Profile has a Questions and Answers section. Customers ask questions there. You answer them. Other customers see those answers before they call or visit. It's one of the simplest ways to show you're responsive and knowledgeable—and it matters for local search.

Here's what you need to know to use it well.

What the Q&A section does

When someone searches for your business on Google Maps or Google Search, they see your profile card. Below your reviews, there's a Q&A tab. Customers can ask questions like "Do you take walk-ins?" or "What are your hours on Sunday?" You can answer them. Other customers can vote on whether an answer was helpful.

Google shows the most helpful Q&A pairs at the top. If you don't answer, other customers can answer for you—and those answers might be wrong.

The Q&A section also shows up in your Google Business Profile schema, which means search engines can index it. A well-answered Q&A can help you rank for long-tail search phrases that match customer questions.

Why you should answer questions yourself

If you don't answer, customers will. And they might get it wrong. A customer might say you're open on Sundays when you're closed. Another might give outdated pricing. Once a wrong answer gets votes, it's harder to correct.

When you answer, you control the message. You can be friendly, specific, and accurate. You also show that you're paying attention to your profile—which builds trust.

Answering questions also gives you a chance to highlight what makes you different. If someone asks "Do you offer same-day appointments?" and you do, you've just answered a question that might have sent them to a competitor.

How to answer questions on your Google Business Profile

You need to be the owner or a staff member with access to your profile.

  1. Go to Google Business Profile (search.google.com/business).
  2. Sign in with the email linked to your business.
  3. Select your business.
  4. Click the "Questions and answers" tab.
  5. Find a question. Click "Provide an answer."
  6. Type your answer in plain language. Keep it short—under 200 words is best.
  7. Click "Post."

Your answer appears immediately. You can edit or delete it anytime.

Write answers that customers actually read

Customers are scanning, not reading. Use short sentences. Be specific. If the question is "What time do you open?" don't say "We open early." Say "We open at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. on Saturday, and we're closed Sunday."

If a question doesn't apply to your business, you can say so. If someone asks "Do you offer vegan options?" and you're a plumbing company, you can answer "We're a plumbing company, so we don't have a menu. But we're happy to help with your plumbing needs."

Don't be stiff. Write like you're talking to a neighbor. "Yep, we take walk-ins" works better than "Our business model accommodates unscheduled customer visits."

Answer the questions customers actually ask

Look at the questions you're getting. They tell you what customers want to know. If three people ask about parking, you should answer that question clearly and pin it to the top if Google lets you.

If you're not getting questions, that's fine. You can't force them. But you can make it easy for customers to ask by keeping your profile complete and up to date. A profile with missing hours or an old phone number signals that you're not paying attention.

Use Q&A to show up for long-tail searches

If customers are asking "Do you offer emergency same-day service?" and you do, answering that question helps you rank for that phrase. Google's algorithm picks up the question and your answer, and it can help you show up when someone searches for those words.

This is especially useful for service businesses. A plumber who answers "Do you offer emergency service on weekends?" is more likely to show up for that search than a plumber who doesn't.

Keep your answers honest and current

Don't make up answers to questions you don't get. Don't answer a question about pricing if your prices change seasonally—say so. If you're not sure about something, say "I'll check with our team and get back to you."

If your hours change or a service ends, update your answers. Old, wrong answers hurt you more than no answer at all.

Q&A is part of a bigger picture. Customers who see good answers to their questions are more likely to leave a good review. They're also more likely to call or visit. So answering questions well is part of building trust—which leads to more reviews, which helps you rank.

If you're asking customers for reviews, make sure your Q&A section is clean and up to date first. A customer who sees unanswered questions or wrong information will be less likely to leave a review.

Claim your Google Business Profile if you haven't already. Go to the Q&A tab. Read the questions customers have asked. Answer the three most common ones with short, specific, honest answers. If you don't have questions yet, that's okay—just make sure your hours, phone, and address are correct. Come back to Q&A once a month to see if new questions have come in.

FAQ

Can I delete a question someone asked?

You can't delete a customer's question, but you can flag it if it's spam or violates Google's policies. You can always post your own answer to clarify or correct it.

What if a customer's answer to someone else's question is wrong?

Post your own answer. Google shows the owner's answer prominently. If the customer answer has votes but is wrong, your answer will appear right below it. You can also flag the wrong answer if it violates Google's policies.

How long does it take for my answer to show up?

Your answer appears on your profile immediately after you post it. It may take longer to show up in Google Search results, depending on Google's indexing schedule.

Does answering Q&A help me rank in Google Maps?

Answering questions accurately and keeping your profile complete are part of a strong local presence. There is no way to promise a specific ranking, but a well-maintained profile with good Q&A answers signals to Google that your business is active and trustworthy.

Should I answer questions about competitors?

No. Stay focused on your own business. If someone asks "How do you compare to [competitor]?" you can say "We'd love to tell you more about what we offer—call us or stop by."
